Look one of six · Meta Daylight · watercolor on north-light paper

Storeybrook

A book on a table with a game folded inside it. Walk down the brook and the paper changes under you: six looks, one set of words, one page.

the brook is the map. every stone is a look.

The adventure

Seven pets are waiting along the brook: one in every look, and one at the end for whoever finds the other six. Find them yourself, or let the book play itself.

Look two · Knight Night · a cobalt paper theatre by candle

    Bedtime at the brook

The same pages after dark. The candle is the accent, the washes glow instead of stain, and every story can be read aloud with the words lighting as they go.

    Bedtime at the brook

When the candle was lit, the brook got quieter, the way brooks do when they think someone is listening. Saelion curled up on the far stone with all five arms tucked in and one wing over her nose.

The nougats in the jar settled with a small sound, like a sigh in a sweet shop. Somewhere upstream a frog was practising one note, and getting it wrong in the same place every time.

“Tomorrow,” said Saelion, to nobody in particular, “I will be a bunny for the whole morning.” Then she fell asleep, and the candle kept the rest of the story for her.

Look three · Ink Blot · black ink, e-ink and print

    Nothing moves, everything reads

For e-ink slates, for paper, and for anyone who wants no colour and no motion. Every pigment turns to ink, washes become stipple, and the brook becomes a dotted line.

    Who reads

    Chapter two

Nobody had walked to the far stone in years, so the moss had made itself at home.

    7

    things the brook said

    plink. plonk. a fish.

    8

Dora took the long way round, past the porch stone and the one that wobbled, because the long way had better things to look at.

    9

At the far stone there was a jar, and the jar was nearly empty. That was the good part. It meant there was room.

    The nougat heist

The loud chapters, title cards and sound effects. The one look where an exclamation mark is at home.

    Meanwhile, under the stones…

    PLUNK

    NOUGAT!

Is that a nougat in the brook?

    It is a stone. Probably.

it is warm from the sun

    SPLOOSH

    Later, at the jar.

    The end. Probably.

Look five · Origami · folded paper on a cutting mat

    Fold your own brook

Origami is the look for making things: editors, level makers, settings. Change the controls and the map refolds; walk a stone and the creature grows.

    An egg, for now.

    The album

For the doll’s chapters and the things you keep. Every look you walked through left a sticker here, and a nougat in the jar.

A look changes materials and fonts, never content, order or meaning. Here is one page open on six screens at once, from a phone to a television across the room.
